My Memories of Grandma Georgie

Grandma Georgie is what we (Pookie, Simone, and I) called her.  She was like our guardian angel.  Everything was fine until the day she died.  We were very close to her and she was mommie's best friend.  I thought it was special to see a mother and daughter that were close and actually got along with each other.

I remember her personality very clearly.  She was a feisty woman, tall and strong looking.  I don't believe that she was afraid of anyone.

I remember this one particular day, Grandma Georgie came over to the house for her daily visit.  I was sitting on a slide in the playground where we lived.  When Pookie (Andre) and I saw her car, we jumped up and ran as fast we could to reach her yelling, "Grandma Georgie! Grandma Georgie!"  When she turned around it looked as though she was walking in slow motion.  Her long thick hair was flying back like the wind was blowing it.  She had on a blue short set, tube socks and brown sandals.  She had a glowing smile as she approached us.  When we finally reached each other, I grabbed one leg and Pookie grabbed the other.  It's funny as I visualize it now because even though we were hugging and holding on to each of her legs, Grandma Georgie kept on walking with us holding on.

NaNa and Pook Pook is what she called us.  I was always so happy when she came around.  I was the oldest grandchild living in Buffalo, so I had the privilege of spending plenty of time with her.  And yes, when she would get mad at us, she would bite on that famous finger (you all know the one).

I remember the night that Grandma Georgie passed away.  I must have been about 12 years old.  This particular night, Mommy had us sleeping downstairs on the living room floor.  I just remember a voice in my dream as clear as day say, "Bye Bye NaNa."  When I woke up from the dream, Mommy was crying.  She had lost her best friend, I lost Grandma Georgie, my guardian angel.
